Let's talk about the notorious server software legal event that led to spigot having to be built via buildtools in today's age. Not sure if any minecraft elders or historians can chime in, but it does seem like the massive community backlash over the EULA enforcement and the subsequent CraftBukkit DMCA takedown was the absolute breaking point.
