What render & simulation distance should I use?

Hi,

I’m running a small Minecraft Java server and I’m a bit confused about the difference between render distance and simulation distance, and what values I should actually use.

My setup:

  • CPU: Ryzen 9 7950X3D (hosted)
  • Server allocation: only 2 CPU threads / 2 vCores
  • Players: ~5–6 active players
  • World: pre-generated with Chunky (10,000 block radius)
  • Plugins: Chunky, Voxy, ViaVersion, ViaBackwards
  • Survival server (vanilla+), mostly exploring and building

My questions:

  1. What is the real difference between render distance and simulation distance in terms of server performance?
  2. What render distance would you recommend for a server like this?
  3. What simulation distance would make sense to keep TPS stable while still having good gameplay?

I understand render distance affects how far players can see, but I’m not fully sure how much simulation distance impacts CPU compared to it.

Would something like:

  • Render: 32
  • Simulation: 32

make sense?

Any explanations or real-world recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks!
