who has their servers in the same room, on the same network and what protections did you set up?

i have a machine running a small private server in my room running on my home's internet, currently all i have set up is just ubuntu server and the amp panel, so i basically dont have any security, which being a small private server with a few friends doesnt make it that much of an issue, but since i wanted to start hosting a public one on that same machine, i was wondering what protections i should setup, also consider that im not good with that stuff so please try explaining things in a way that i can understand
