Differentiating between Forum and Forums

As we are getting more and more new users who weren't brought up in the era of the old school forum (aka bulletin or message board) I am more and and more finding the terms forum (meaning the whole discussion forum) and forums, meaning the different sections or subforums. The term Board is used a lot here, and also in the ACP.

So apart from that and seeing as how hardly any users call a forum a board any more, we have the confusion between the two terms...
