Follow-Up: 2.5 Month Old Minecraft Network — 1,400+ Joins, New 38 Peak, Looking for Next-Step Advice

Hey everyone,

I made a post recently asking for advice about growing a small but active Minecraft network and turning joins into actual regular players. I got a lot of useful feedback, especially around first impressions, onboarding, server-list traffic being colder, and making the gameplay loop obvious within the first few minutes.

Since then, I’ve made some major changes based on that feedback.

The biggest changes:

  • Completely revamped both server spawns
  • Reworked the first-join experience to make the gameplay loop clearer
  • Added clearer NPCs, holograms, and paths for new players
  • Made it easier to understand where to start, what to do, and what the main features are
  • Improved the way SMP and Skyblock are presented as part of the same network
  • Fixed major lag issues so both servers are running much smoother
  • Started taking YouTube Shorts more seriously

One of my YouTube Shorts also ended up doing around 17k views, which gave the server a noticeable boost. Since my last post, joins are way up, and we hit a new all-time peak of 38 players online.

The biggest improvement is that the network now holds 20+ players much more often. I’d honestly say we are above 20 players online over 50% of the time now, which is a big step from where I was when 20 online felt like a rare exciting moment.

Current rough state:

  • Server age: about 2.5 months
  • Started from nothing
  • Network unique joins: 1,400+
  • Previous peak when I posted: 34
  • New all-time peak: 38
  • Two active gamemodes: SMP + Skyblock
  • SMP is still the main community hub
  • Skyblock is newer and growing, but still smaller
  • Server-list ads brought traffic, but content seems to bring warmer players
  • YouTube Short reached around 17k views
  • 20+ online is now becoming much more common

The advice from my last post helped a lot. The biggest things that seemed to matter were simplifying the first-join experience, making the server feel more polished immediately, reducing information overload, and making the gameplay loop easier to understand right away.

Now I’m trying to figure out the next stage.

My goal is to get from where I am now to something like:

  • 50 player peak
  • 30 online feeling normal
  • Better long-term retention
  • More regulars, not just more first-time joins
  • Skyblock becoming more active instead of mostly AFK
  • A stronger content pipeline with Shorts/TikTok-style videos

For owners who have gone from the 20–40 peak range into the 50+ peak / 30 normal online range:

  1. What actually moved you into that next tier?
  2. Was it mostly content, events, Discord activity, paid ads, or better retention?
  3. How did you turn short-term joins into weekly regulars?
  4. What made your server start feeling self-sustaining?
  5. How did you make your second gamemode feel active without splitting the community too much?
  6. Did daily/weekly scheduled events make a noticeable difference?
  7. What metrics should I focus on now besides total joins and peak player count?

I’m still very open to blunt criticism. The server is doing better than before, but I know there’s a big difference between getting a 38 peak once and making 30 online feel normal.

Any advice from owners who have been through this stage would be appreciated.
