So we've been trying to set up a modded server for us and a few of our friends on and off for a few months now and we've continuously run into a weird error. We've been running Forge 1.20.1.
The Error
This is our best guess as to what causes it: when more than one player are within render distance of each other and structure or chest, one of them gets kicked with the following error:
The disconnected player attempting to reconnect will either cause them to reconnect briefly before disconnecting again or kick the other player in the chunk.
What We've Tried
To make it especially confusing, we were able to run a server with these mods several months ago for around three weeks without this error popping up once. Exact same mod list on the exact same forge version on the exact same host (PebbleHost). It was only after encountering this error again with a new pack that we went back to test this old one since they share a lot of mods and found the error had somehow shown up again. We have no clue what to do at this point besides going back to the drawing board and adding mods back in one by one.

The Error
This is our best guess as to what causes it: when more than one player are within render distance of each other and structure or chest, one of them gets kicked with the following error:
Internal Exception: java.lang.IndexOutOfBoundsException: readerIndex(23) + length(8) exceeds writerIndex(23): PooledUnsafeDirectByteBuf(ridx: 23, widx: 23, cap: 23)The disconnected player attempting to reconnect will either cause them to reconnect briefly before disconnecting again or kick the other player in the chunk.
What We've Tried
- Disabled several mods on our pack that affect loot and structure generation (Yung's mods, Ribbits, EMI Loot, Loot Integrations, Data Anchor, Via Romana, Better Archaeology)
- Added Packet Fixer and XL Packet mods after some research told us similar errors were caused by bad packets being sent
- checked and updated our forge versions on both the client and server (47.4.10 currently. we also did attempts on 47.4.20 and 47.4.0)
- reloaded and regenerated the mods' config files
