Hosting a Server

So my team and I are currently working on our server and getting it hosted by a company. However long term I don’t know if this will be the best option.

I guess my question in your experience is:

1. 
   Is it usually cheaper to use a hosting service rather than hosting it yourself?
   
   
2. 
   If you know- what are the ups and downs to hosting one yourself?
   
   
3. 
   What equipment would I need? Link any tutorials or videos covering that?
   
   
4. 
   Would it probably be better long term to host ones ourselves? (Since this will be a multi-year project)
