Spent a ton of time over the summer developing a server that I really believed in, we got a few players to check it out over the course of the summer and the ones who did log on genuinely seemed to really enjoy the gameplay.
I had a plugin running to track player statistics such as how many new IGNs logged in each day, returning IGNs, daily log-ins, hours played by each player, average session time etc. and these statistics all looked great on paper for the first week or two. Every new join would log between 30 mins to 2 hours and we ended up with about 12 players who consistently logged in each day for 1 to 5 hours on average, but only ever had 2 to 3 online at the same time.
The server never grew a player-base past the first few weeks of joins and I'm wondering where things went wrong on that front. We were getting pretty consistent votes on all the major vote sites, had a decent social media presence with consistent posting of short form content, had some people making reddit posts and sending emails out to streamers and YouTubers, even got a few twitch streamers to check it out and stream. Players just never logged on it seems.
Does it all really boil down to a case of getting lucky to get that first snowball rolling for a player base? I feel as though we did everything right on the marketing front and stayed consistent all summer, but we never saw results for it. The people who did stop by really loved the server and what we were going for, I just wish more people gave it a chance.
