Is Spigot still the go to for the server?

It's been over a decade since I've hosted a Minecraft server, but one of the Discord servers I run is interested and I have VMs available. I was thinking of just using vanilla Java for the server since I don't anticipate a lot of people on at the same time, but figured I should use Spigot for future proofing. Is that still the best choice these days for a vanilla compatible experience?
