Random person joined self hosted Minecraft world

So I am self hosting a world with a few friends and while I was playing a random person joined and luckily they didn't grief or anything. I know now to keep whitelist on but how did this person join I mean nobody new them and also I checked their IP location and they were based in Canada while were in the US.
