First, a little disclaimer: This post is not supposed to be something like an ad or a request for new players.
What is in your opinion, the best way to get new players onto your server, and what’s the best way to convince them to keep playing? I would also appreciate some points that focuses on what a small server team could do, opposed to a big server team. Also, as I am part of one’s server team, what can we do especially as a freebuild/survival server, as the genre has probably shrunk a bit over the last few years and it feels like, that especially there, players are looking for something unique. But when trying to be unique, one can always quickly go into the wrong direction.
For getting new players, I feel like the general consensus I always hear is to have a good social media presence, but for that I believe you would always need someone who knows the server well, actually wants to do all the SM stuff, and can actually produce good, consistent content. Though I would say the most important things are a good first impressions, which probably revolves around giving a player an easy start and not to overwhelm them with information, yet showing them most of what the server has to offer. But then again, the question is, how to do that.
For keeping the players engaged, I would say the most important thing is, to make it as easy as possible for them to do what they’d like to do, and to give them something they can work toward in the long run, like custom achievements or hard-to-get items, so they don’t get bored after their 2 weeks Minecraft phase. Also, off course, a good presence of a friendly server team which interacts with the players an shows interest in their ideas and needs. Also showing players that the server is always being worked on and improved.
Especially with the last point, the question is how you can achieve that with a small server team or rather how you can new actually good team members. As in the last couple of years, the server I am on always had the problem of team members who think they are the greatest and basically think they can do what ever they want, and then, after like half a year of being in the team, they quickly lose interest in the server and the game entirely. So as a server team, you should probably always look for people who are genuinely invested in the game, have enough time to actually work on the server, and are actually willing to work as a team rather than constantly doing their own stuff without communicating with other team members. But such People always seem a bit hard to get.
