Very bizzare /sethome and beds issue

I'm using the amazing Lands plugin and Essentials of course. Despite having set their spawn using either the command or beds (including a message in chat from the plugin confirming it) and no errors in the server console, my players keep respawning at the world spawn (set with /set worldspawn) after death! they can teleport to their home with /home but when they die they still respawn at spawn. I triple checked all the permissions and I'm really lost. help? please?
