My server is done for, and I'm looking to move on by starting over again with something completely new. I still plan to use the latest version of the same modpack, but I'm tired of people isolating themselves in far flung corners of the world, refusing to talk to a single soul the whole time, then quickly leaving. I wanted to build my own community, but it all fell apart for multiple reasons that I won't get into here, this being the biggest.
So far I've got one idea I've got to build up an actual community but don't know how viable it would be. Emphasize towns and trading. Spawn would have a market area like a mall or colorful bazaar utilizing shop machines and noncraftable coins as currency. You must either find coins in Lootr chests, by trading with villagers, or by selling to other players. We start out with 2-3 towns, and everyone must join one or create their own. There are no size restrictions on player homes, so go as crazy as the chosen region allows and also keep your own storage area, but everything else is shared among your town. Towns function similarly to trade guilds in that they choose what to specialize in and build themselves around. For example, biome specific crops and wood types, magical items and services, machines, technology, weapons, armor, or tools. It's not limited to one thing and won't be micromanaged to sustain a monopoly.
There are also other worlds to settle in besides the vanilla dimensions, so you get opportunities for more exotic items for those willing to pursue them on behalf of those who can't or don't want to put in the work. Not only is no one person or town allowed to gather everything in the game on their own, there's too much for that to be possible. So to make it easier to get anything you want, you can buy or sell at the market, buy from people directly, or trade something with someone in another town. Towns would also be encouraged to create their own attractions like spleef, mob, or PvP arenas or minigames with their own distinct flair. And periodically we could host events where the towns compete or contribute something. For example, Halloween can be a haunted house contest, and New Year's and 4th of July could be rockets and a display for a fireworks show.
Does this sound like a good idea, or at least interesting in theory? What other things can be done to foster some sense of community and not make people go into isolation and quickly leave?
